Residential expertise of RGD

One of the recent projects I’ve been involved in was the redesign of a high-end residential property. The most interesting aspect of this project was the opportunity to blend contemporary design elements with the client’s desire for a touch of traditional elegance. It challenged us to strike a balance between modern aesthetics and timeless sophistication.

Seamless blend of aesthetics: One particularly challenging aspect was integrating the client’s extensive art collection into the design scheme. Each piece had its own unique character and required careful consideration in terms of placement, lighting, and how it complemented the overall design vision. To overcome this challenge, we worked closely with the client to understand their preferences and then developed a curated approach to showcase each piece effectively within the space.

Effectively delivering on time: Managing the project timeline and coordinating with various contractors and vendors presented its own set of challenges. To ensure everything stayed on track, we implemented a detailed project management plan with clear milestones and deadlines. Regular communication with all stakeholders helped us anticipate and address any potential issues before they became major setbacks.

Success is not the only outcome: Overall, the project was a success, and the most rewarding part was seeing the client’s vision come to life and their delight with the final result. It reinforced the importance of effective communication, meticulous planning, and creativity in overcoming challenges and delivering exceptional interior design solutions.

In Conversation

Renu Garg started her career in Chandigarh as a junior designer in a humble interior and architecture firm. Over the years, she relentlessly pursued her passion for the profession and is the proud founder of Renu Garg Design. She currently resides in her beautiful, self-designed abode with her husband, Sanjeev Garg, and is the mother of Nehal and Arush, her children. Renu cherishes her family and adores being around them. She loves exploring the world, enriching herself with new ideas and finding inspiration in everything, including her everyday life.

Renu is a passionate interior designer and as she delved into the world of design, she became ever so sure that this was her true calling. Despite hailing from a prestigious business family, Renu single-handedly built her venture, ‘ (RGD)’ from the grounds up in 1998. Undeterred and fueled by an unwavering fascination for the world of design, Renu tenaciously went after her dreams and encouraged many more women entrepreneurs around her during her own journey. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that opportunities abound for those who are willing to embrace them and work tirelessly to make their aspirations a tangible achievement. Here is a sneak peek into our conversation with her.

What made you choose this industry?

Renu: Well! I guess, this industry chose me. I visited the campus to enrol in a professional course in pharmacy, but God clearly had a different plan. As I was walking through the bustling corridors of my college, I was intrigued by a group of interior design students. I loved their creative energy and the passion with which they spoke about their classes. And at that moment, I thought, let me apply for both courses, why not? As fate would have it, I was accepted only in the interior course. Although I was initially taken aback as I hadn’t made it into pharmacy, I embraced this opportunity with lots of enthusiasm. It felt like a sign, a calling to unlock my creative potential and pursue my passion for design. Fuelled by a newfound sense of purpose and promise, I shifted my entire focus on studying for and acing interiors. With the passing of time, my passion for interior design blossomed into a successful career.

What are the sources of inspiration for your design and creations?

Renu: My inspiration stems from my observation of everything around me. I find creativity on the roadside, at my home, while I’m traveling and even in my conversations with people. Besides that, I really look forward to creative stimulation through extensive travel across the country. Each place I visit instills me with unique perspectives, showcasing nature’s beauty in varied forms and unveiling the local culture and trends. These experiences serve as a rich source of inspiration. As a designer, I blend these diverse influences into a unique design language, creating marvelous spaces that create wow experiences.

Tell me about the very first project that you ever worked on as a designer/architect.

Renu: My first project has a special place in my heart as I worked on every aspect of the project myself, including each and every drawing. This was way before technology was as advanced as it is now. We had to figure out practical solutions without relying on modern tools. It was a residential home in Chandigarh of a family of 4, for which I had done the complete visualization, had spent time on every small detail and had gone out of the way to deliver my best. It was a real hands-on experience and it taught me a lot about being creative and resourceful in design.

What do you love most about your job that is not related to design or drawing?

Renu: In my role as an interior designer, I find immense joy in the ever-evolving nature of my work. Each new project presents unique design challenges, allowing me to flex my creative muscles and push the boundaries of innovation. One aspect of my job that I particularly cherish is the opportunity to forge deep connections with my clients and their families. As we start the journey of bringing their dream spaces to life, I strive to understand not only the client’s vision but also the unspoken expectations of each family member. This process often leads to meaningful conversations and moments of shared understanding, fostering a sense of trust. What sets our profession apart is the ability to bridge generational gaps and create spaces that resonate with multiple generations. From grandparents to parents to grandchildren, I have the privilege of working with families spanning different age groups and backgrounds. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the dynamic interplay of perspectives and preferences, and to craft designs that harmonize these diverse voices into a cohesive whole. Ultimately, what I love most about being an interior designer is the opportunity to touch lives and create spaces that enrich the daily experiences of my clients. Whether it’s transforming a house into a home or breathing new life into a commercial space, the ability to make a tangible difference in people’s lives is what inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

As a team leader, what do you believe should be the most important characteristic of your team members?

Renu: As a leader, I believe some of the most important characteristics of a team member are adaptability, attention to detail, effective communication, and their willingness to learn. I really encourage young designers to go all out and hustle and give it their all in their former years so that they build hands-on experience, not just in design but also in dealing with clients.

What are the most challenging aspects of any projects that you usually take up?

Renu: The most challenging aspects of my projects as an interior designer are capturing the essence of my client’s emotions, translating them into tangible designs, and doing so within budget constraints. It’s about creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also evoke feelings of comfort, joy, and belonging, all while being mindful of financial limitations. Balancing practicality with emotion, and ensuring every detail speaks to the client’s unique story is both the challenge and the reward of my work.

What would be your advice for budding interior designers?

Renu: Design from your heart, not just your mind. Your passion and empathy will resonate with clients. Stay true to your vision but be open to learning and adapting. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. And remember, every space you design is a chance to make a positive impact on someone’s life. Let your creativity shine, and never underestimate the power of a well-designed space to touch hearts and inspire dreams.
