Space Matrix and Saahas Zero Waste (SZW) Partner to Revolutionize Construction Waste Recycling in India

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Space Matrix, a global workplace design and build powerhouse, has joined forces with Saahas Zero Waste (SZW) to embark on a transformative journey toward sustainable construction waste management in India. The initiative, named Re: Source, aims to set new standards for integrating circular economy concepts into construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, to yield significant environmental benefits in the years ahead.

The current scenario in India paints a concerning picture, with the country accounting for 35% to 40% of construction waste globally, yet only about 1% of these materials being recycled, leading to the majority ending up in landfills. Recognizing the environmental impact of this trend, Space Matrix has taken a proactive stance by introducing the Re: Source framework to channel waste materials back to construction sites. By minimizing processing and converting waste into the same or other types of construction materials, the initiative not only promotes sustainability but also enhances cost-effectiveness, with construction materials typically accounting for 50% to 60% of a project’s budget.

Akshay Lakhanpal, CEO India, Space Matrix, emphasized the significance of this novel project in catalyzing waste management efforts in the C&D sector in India. Despite existing policy frameworks such as the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016, responsible disposal remains a daunting challenge in the country. Through the collaboration with SZW, Space Matrix aims to lead this change by engaging clients and stakeholders to reduce the environmental impact of construction waste and comply with regulations. The inaugural pilot project under the Re:Source initiative has already delivered positive outcomes, showcasing the feasibility and environmental benefits of integrating circular economy principles into C&D waste management.

Shobha Raghavan, COO of Saahas Zero Waste, highlighted the potential of environmental conservation through the adoption of circular economy principles in addressing India’s overall C&D waste. By partnering with Space Matrix, SZW aims to make a major impact in this direction and continue contributing to the fight against climate change through Project Re:Source.

The partnership has already seen tangible results through a pilot project executed at one of Space Matrix’s brownfield Fit-out projects in Bengaluru. Spanning 19,570 square feet, the initiative generated over 43 tonnes of waste between August and November 2023. Through effective recycling and reuse methodologies across diverse waste streams, the project achieved a remarkable 48% reduction in landfill waste. Notably, the project also led to a reduction of 15.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions, the recycling of 20.5 tonnes of materials, and sending 0.4 tonnes for co-processing. These outcomes underscore the potential for enhancing recyclability by emphasizing source segregation practices and ensuring ample space for storing diverse waste streams on-site.

Space Matrix’s commitment to revolutionizing workplace design and build services is evident through its evolution into a dynamic, agile, 21st-century digital enterprise that specializes in workplace design. With relevant project experience in over 80 cities and 16 office locations globally, the firm has consistently ranked highly in international design accolades and continues to push boundaries in workplace transformation.

The collaboration between Space Matrix and SZW represents a significant step towards redefining construction waste disposal paradigms in India and fostering a sustainable future for the country’s built environment. As the initiative gains momentum, it is poised to inspire industry-wide change on a national scale and serve as a model for responsible construction waste management globally.

The Re:Source initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing pressing environmental challenges. By embracing circular economy principles and leveraging strategic partnerships, Space Matrix and SZW have set a new standard for sustainable construction waste management in India, demonstrating the potential for meaningful impact through proactive industry leadership.
